  • An interview with today’s weekend feature Kevin from Crawlspace Studios
How did Crawlspace Studios begin?
I started screen printing about seven years ago in a small room in my buddies basement. When we began, we just wanted to print t-shirts to wear and poster to decorate our apartments with. We just loved design, printing and creating graphics. The hand printed aspect was something that really resonated with us.  We just did it because we loved it. After college I upgraded all our gear and presses, while working another graphic design job, at another local screen printer. For about 8 months I worked two jobs. One during the day to pay the bills, and the other at night and during lunch hours to pursue our dream of one day running our own shop. After about another year, I made the final push and quit my job, to pursue Crawlspace full time.
What makes Crawlspace Studio designs different?
We like to keep coming up with new ideas, different designs, because it keeps everything interesting and fun. I worry that if we ever did too much of one thing I wouldn’t feel a challenge anymore and that I might get bored. There is definitely a common thread throughout our work though. We stick to very muted colors and earth tones for our shirts, ink colors and just about everything else. They go great with everything and are very neutral. I don’t think we have ever put one of our designs on a hot green t-shirt. Something else that makes us a bit different I think, is our blending of childhood classics and taking them into a new light. Taking these things along with many others and giving them a new, not so child-like, context.
