How did you get into jewelry making?
In college I dabbled in everything that I could, from poetry to acting. I studied painting and illustration for two years before venturing into Craft Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University. Ultimately, I graduated with a BFA in Craft/Material Studies with a focus in Metals and Ceramics. That is when I started selling my pieces. A few years after college, I narrowed my focus primarily to jewelry because it was practical to do from home. By the time I started giantLION, there was no going back, I became so fulfilled personally and artistically, it was my calling. We’ve been in business just one year, and it keeps getting better.
Where do you get your materials?
All over the world, literally. I spend a lot of time finding unique, quality, and rare materials. Many of my beads and stones come from Africa, Thailand, India, and Spain.
You like to incorporate skulls and geometric shapes into your designs. What draws you to them?
For me, it is not so much about geometry as it is repetition. I am drawn to shapes and forms that appear all around us, and I work them into a pieces that ultimately have that “cool girl” effect, whether worn alone or layered. Skulls speak to me in the same way. They feel organic and unique and carry a multitude of personality. Not to mention I just think skulls are so chic when they’re worn as everyday pieces.
