We chatted with Ashley Scott, creator and designer behind Drapes By Ashley Scott, about her source of inspiration, personal style, and how she got the nickname “Drapes.”

You started as a painter. Are there influences of that in your work?

It definitely influences my work. I’m obsessed with romanticism and the kind of art that tells a story. That’s what I aspire to do with my pieces—create a narration others can relate to.

What’s the story behind naming your brand “Drapes?”

I take my inspiration from drapery, tassels, romanticism, and movement. That’s where the name came from. People actually started calling me that when I first started designing. It has stayed with me since. I’ve incorporated it into my designs aesthetically as well as named my entire brand after it. Drapes really is such a large part of me. I ask myself how I would want to feel when I put on a bold piece. Having fun has always been my motto. I love playing dress up and I want wearers of my pieces to experience the same kind of thrill. That’s why I make jewelry that you can just put on and wear. Don’t over think—just do it!

What’s one piece of jewelry you can’t leave the house without?

The disk necklace I designed is the one piece I cannot leave without. It goes with everything in my wardrobe. I find myself wearing it way too much to ever leave without it.

Clockwork Gears is a clothing design company who has paired with philanthropic organization, Falling Whistles, to support a peaceful Congo. We chatted with Vince Bartozzi of Clockwork Gears about how an apparel design company teamed up with a philanthropy.

What inspired you to incorporate philanthropy into your work?

The concept behind Clockwork Gears grew from our love of bicycles and the sport of cycling. We have a passion for it. Another passion of ours is helping people, so it was only natural that we combine the two elements. Our mission and goal is to integrate our love of bicycles into unique, creative, and sometimes humorous designs while being able to help our community.

We read that a percentage of sales goes to the numerous charities you work with. How did you get involved with them?

All of the charities play a role in our everyday lives. We have family members who compete in the Special Olympics & participate in Bike to The Beach, so it was a natural fit for our giving program. We also work with Falling Whistles, which is Los Angeles based group that is battling issues in the Congo. We’re based in Washington, DC so we’ve seen their advocacy first hand. We’ve seen their work and we wanted to help them do more.

In 2008, the founding members of Falling Whistles met five boys in the eastern Congo. The boys were all former child-soldiers held in a military camp. There they heard the story of children who were sent to the frontline of war—armed with only a whistle. That story became their mission statement and symbol. In the last three years they have invested in 8 Congolese visionaries and built a coalition of 35 Congressman, 16 Senators, 200 retailers and over 50,000 whistleblowers.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we are bringing you a week’s worth of interviews about businesses that are either started by moms, mom & daughters or work that has been inspired by motherhood.

Our last interview comes from our very own founder, Heather Lipner and her mom, Joyce Lipner. They share memories, a love for shoes, and a passion for creativity.

Does Heather get her passion for design from you?

Joyce: I am not sure about the origin of Heather’s passion for design, but I will tell you that she had her own style from very early on. I always made sure that she could pick out her own clothing even as early on as 2 years old. She always had her own sense of style that others copied.

How has your mother influenced you in your creative choices?

Heather: I think creativity comes from a strong sense of confidence. My mom has taught me to be anything I want, to express myself however it emotes, to strive to be the best person I can be and never wait for anyone to do things for me. My creative choices are powered by that freedom, expression, hunger, and the confidence that wills it.

Have you ever collaborated on any projects?

Joyce: Perhaps we have. I love to sew, knit and crochet. We have worked on building a padded headboard as well as other projects like drapery, and/or custom pillows. It’s always great to hear an idea and then make it happen in its own unique way.

Heather: My momma is the ultimate supporter and collaborator. Whenever I wanted to do a creative project, she not only would get sincerely excited, but she’d also run to store with me, and pick out the materials. Then she’d not only teach me, but get in on the mix as well; staple gun, hang, nail, sew, whatever it took. We’ve done so many projects together - headboards, pillows, duvets, upholstery, the list goes on. While our styles are quite different, I like to think that I’ve inspired her home remodeling choices as well.

What’s one of your favorite memories from Heather’s childhood?

Joyce: There are so many! I guess my very favorite is a birthday party she held. She decided that her party would have a theme—a tea party in which all her friends had to “dress up” in stylish clothing and hats and bring some “gossip” to share. I am not sure who had a better time, her little friends or the moms!

What’s one of your favorite childhood memories with your mother?

Heather: My mom had summers off so I’d wait until I heard my dad leave for work, then jump into her bed and we’d watch soaps all morning. It was like that every single summer. All my acting skills comes from Days of Our Lives.

Is there anything from Heather’s closet you’ve got your eye on?

Joyce: I love shoes and boy does she have some wonderful shoes!

Do you take style inspiration from your mother’s closet?

Heather: Oh gosh. I remember she had amazing high heel boots. I wanted them so badly but was too ‘young’ to wear them. By the time I was old enough my feet were bigger than a size 6.5. Still pissed. We lived in Chicago and it was the ’80s and I adored her fur coats and would literally just hang out in the closet with them. She had great accessories - jewelry & belts & hats.

We chatted with Trecy Bleich of Vella Mode, about her mother, their shared sense of style, and how that style is exhibited in her brand.

We read that your brand, Vella Mode, was named after your mother. How has she inspired your work?

In her time, she was what we now call a “fashionista”. Her bold, yet elegant style set her apart. She was known for wearing fur pieces, tailored garments, fascinators, wide brimmed hats, classic jewels, and patent leathers. I try to incorporate the same bold elegance into what I design.

What is the best piece of advice your mother has given you that you’ve applied to your business?

Growing up, my mother always told me to be a lady. She passed away about 10 years before I started this company. But I’ll always remember what she told me. I’ve had clients describe my pieces as “elegant”—even the more casual ones. I’m always trying to add that ladylike quality to everything I make. My mother’s advice has become one of my signature aesthetics.

Although all your pieces are in honor of your mother, which do you feel exemplifies her style the best?

I feel the dressier pieces exemplify her style the best. For example, the black and gold necklace from my Cosmo Moss line. It’s a stunning gold and black matte piece that’s bold, but elegant—just like her.

How would you describe your mother’s style?

Her taste was very high fashion. She had a strong feminine look that was made unique by the details she incorporated into it.

We sat down with Alana Little of Make Pie Not War for our Mother’s Day Special as well as to highlight her for our Designer Spotlight feature. We talk about her daughter, motherhood, her jewelry business, and how they all tie in together.

Was there ever a significant moment or experience with your daughter that inspired a piece?

I am totally that cheesy mom that loves to match with my babe, so I made Lucy and I matching heart rings because she loves my teeny tiny hearts. I just can’t resist! When we wear our rings, her face lights up and she poses with her hand on the hip like she’s a model. It’s so precious and fills up my heart every time! It’s probably why I love making my teeny tiny heart pieces!

Is there a funny or proud moment you want to share as a mother?

There was a time when I was working and Lucy pulled up a chair next to me and grabbed the little blue pliers I bought her. She told me that she wants to work too. She saw me making my ampersand bracelets, so I gave her some chain remnants and some copper wire, which looked like my rose gold. She soon became completely immersed in her project. Having her work alongside me completely filled my heart with such pride. It brought me such joy that she admires what I do! It’s a moment I will always treasure!

In honor of Mother’s Day, we are bringing you a week’s worth of interviews about businesses that are either started by moms, mom & daughters or work that has been inspired by motherhood.

Our second interview is with James Kicinski-McCoy; the woman behind Bleubird Vintage. She chats with us about her kids, her mom, and how she captures those little moments that make life great.

Let’s just start with your kids and how cute they are. Do your kids like to be photographed? What’s your trick in capturing these wonderful moments?

Oh thank you! Growing up with a photographer mother, the kids are used to the camera. Most of the time they do like to have their photo taken. But there are times when it can be annoying. If they don’t want their photo taken, then I respect that and put the camera down. I take a lot of photos. I try to have my camera on hand most of the time so when I do see a special moment, I can quickly snap a few photos. Usually I’m lucky and I will get a good one, but sometimes they are all just a blur because kids are alway on the move.

Has motherhood affected your creative process in terms of your writing style or photo style or even the way you dress?

Sure it has. I can’t dedicate as much time to getting dressed every morning as I used to and I’m not able to write every day; which can be frustrating. But in turn it has allowed me to be creative in other areas that involve my children. I spend more time in the kitchen preparing food or baking and finding fun activities for us to do. I do wish that I had more hours in the day for one on one time though.

Do you let your kids dress themselves or do you dress them?

My big kids dress themselves. I do buy most of their clothes so I get a lot of say as to what goes into their closets, but they are the ones that piece their outfits together each day. My little kids are another story. Baby Sailor is six months, so I get to dress him how I want to. Birdie, who is two and a half, is just starting to have opinions on what she wants to wear. Usually she will pick a piece like a dress or a shirt and then I will plan the rest of her outfit accordingly.

How has your own mom influenced your style?

I have always been such a fan of my mother’s style in the late 70’s and early 80’s. She had tall boots, flowing dresses, and her long dark hair. It’s funny you ask because in the past couple of years I have begun to notice how much I resemble my mother and how similar my style choices are to what she wore when I was a young girl. Many times I think to myself “this is totally something my mom would have worn.”

Blending both a masculine & feminine style into something not overly minimal, pretty or manly is actually a pretty tough job.

Our top two tips:

1 - Pick one feminine color and use it just enough to give the room that lady’s touch. In the photos above, we love the teal rug, light pink chair, pink marbled tub, purple chairs, purple cushions & pinkish red chair.

2 - If you want to include patterns, try traditional or ethnic patterned tiles for the wall or floor. They give that vital worldly, rich & beautiful feel rather than a pretty & cute look.

Our first interview is with mother-daughter style blogging team, StyleLikeU. Mother Elisa Goodkind and daughter Lily Mandelbaum chat with us about each other, their closets, and how StyleLikeU was launched.

How did the idea for StyleLikeU come about?

(Mom) Elisa: I was disillusioned with fashion styling—the same stories over and over with little room for a true voice and creativity. I also found celebrity styling lacking in creativity, especially with the interference of publicists and the very limited room for true expression. Most of the sample sizes are a 2 while the audience differed in body types. It didn’t make sense to me.

(Daugher) Lily: I did not like ”fashion,” as in trends and one dimensional magazines. But I loved the diverse and eclectic group of stylish and innovative people who worked behind the scenes with my mom and who I knew personally in my life.

Elisa and Lily: We were both more in love with the type of person who expressed themselves uniquely in his or her style and life rather than what the formulaic fashion industry was offering us. Video also seemed much more relevant for its ability to get initmate and show what’s truly behind a person.

How does your daughter influence your style?

(Mom) Elisa: She gets me to wear lipstick and to experiment with some color on my face.

How does your mother influence your style?

(Daughter) Lily: She inspires me to try out of the box things. Also, anything bohemian related in my closet was directly influenced by her.

If you were to dress your daughter for a day, what would she be wearing?

(Mom) Elisa: I dont think anything different than what she already wears. Probably something loose and free with a little slouch. Fun and eclectic.

If you were to dress your mother for a day, what would she be wearing?

(Daughter) Lily: Something simple and classic like a blazer with jeans and boots and definitely lots of ethnic jewelry.

Which piece from your daughter’s closet is your favorite? Why?

(Mom) Elisa: Her Ann Demeulemeester tan suede ankle boots. They’re gorgeous.

Which piece from your mother’s closet is your favorite? Why?

(Daughter) Lily: I can’t choose! I want all of her jewelry. They’re so much fun.

We’re excited to introduce guest blogger, Casey Keasler, an interior designer and maker living in Portland, Oregon. Casey tips us off on her must-dos when decorating a small space.

To me, a home is a direct extension of personality and style. As much as I love big expansive open spaces, some of my favorite projects are those where space is at a minimum. As an interior designer, it’s much more challenging to work within small space constraints. Not only does the scale of a room have to feel right, too many things make a room feel cluttered. I always go back to the Coco Chanel quote, “Before leaving the house, a lady should stop, look in the mirror, and remove one piece of jewelry.” Decorate, accessorize, personalize, then take away. It is especially important to give the eye a place to rest.

When considering furniture, ask yourself, is it big, heavy and bulky? Then probably not the best idea for a small space. Lighting is also key. Not just overhead lights, never turn those on unless you’re cleaning or have no other option. A room can be dramatically improved by using a few strategically placed table or floor lamps.

Find clever ways to store things so counters and table tops aren’t over run with stuff and drawers can be used for things you don’t want to see. Taking advantage of wall space for storage is always great for small spaces, like the Uncovet Knife Holder or the Wooden Book Rack Then when you need more space, carve out niches or spots for a small ledge of shelf. Mirrors can play a large part in enlarging a small space too. And my absolute favorite, if you don’t love something, what’s the point of having it in a small space?

What’s the one piece in your collection everyone should own and why?

There are so many good little staples in the Bing Bang collection right now! The tiny skull cuff is probably my favorite. It’s something you can wear everyday and all the time. I have also been wearing the sacred geometry fan necklace from the Black Label collection a lot. It’s a great piece for when you want to wear just jeans and a t-shirt, but still feel dolled up.

Tell us about the first piece of jewelry you’ve ever created.

The first piece of jewelry I think I really ‘created’ was the bar two finger ring. It’s been in both Bing Bang and my fine jewelry brand in several iterations over the years. In Bing Bang, right now, I make it as an infinity loop with a Baguette. There is also one that’s in the shape of a cross as well. I just think when it’s done well, the double ring is super fierce, but also a little sexy.

What’s your personal style mantra?

“Better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven’t done.” We are all just finding ways to express our ideas and interests with what we wear, so fearlessness is the best approach to style.
