We chatted with Ashley Scott, creator and designer behind Drapes By Ashley Scott, about her source of inspiration, personal style, and how she got the nickname “Drapes.”
You started as a painter. Are there influences of that in your work?
It definitely influences my work. I’m obsessed with romanticism and the kind of art that tells a story. That’s what I aspire to do with my pieces—create a narration others can relate to.
What’s the story behind naming your brand “Drapes?”
I take my inspiration from drapery, tassels, romanticism, and movement. That’s where the name came from. People actually started calling me that when I first started designing. It has stayed with me since. I’ve incorporated it into my designs aesthetically as well as named my entire brand after it. Drapes really is such a large part of me. I ask myself how I would want to feel when I put on a bold piece. Having fun has always been my motto. I love playing dress up and I want wearers of my pieces to experience the same kind of thrill. That’s why I make jewelry that you can just put on and wear. Don’t over think—just do it!
What’s one piece of jewelry you can’t leave the house without?
The disk necklace I designed is the one piece I cannot leave without. It goes with everything in my wardrobe. I find myself wearing it way too much to ever leave without it.

In honor of Mother’s Day, we are bringing you a week’s worth of interviews about businesses that are either started by moms, mom & daughters or work that has been inspired by motherhood.
We chatted with Trecy Bleich of Vella Mode, about her mother, their shared sense of style, and how that style is exhibited in her brand.
We read that your brand, Vella Mode, was named after your mother. How has she inspired your work?
In her time, she was what we now call a “fashionista”. Her bold, yet elegant style set her apart. She was known for wearing fur pieces, tailored garments, fascinators, wide brimmed hats, classic jewels, and patent leathers. I try to incorporate the same bold elegance into what I design.
What is the best piece of advice your mother has given you that you’ve applied to your business?
Growing up, my mother always told me to be a lady. She passed away about 10 years before I started this company. But I’ll always remember what she told me. I’ve had clients describe my pieces as “elegant”—even the more casual ones. I’m always trying to add that ladylike quality to everything I make. My mother’s advice has become one of my signature aesthetics.
Although all your pieces are in honor of your mother, which do you feel exemplifies her style the best?
I feel the dressier pieces exemplify her style the best. For example, the black and gold necklace from my Cosmo Moss line. It’s a stunning gold and black matte piece that’s bold, but elegant—just like her.
How would you describe your mother’s style?
Her taste was very high fashion. She had a strong feminine look that was made unique by the details she incorporated into it.

We sat down with Alana Little of Make Pie Not War for our Mother’s Day Special as well as to highlight her for our Designer Spotlight feature. We talk about her daughter, motherhood, her jewelry business, and how they all tie in together.
Was there ever a significant moment or experience with your daughter that inspired a piece?
I am totally that cheesy mom that loves to match with my babe, so I made Lucy and I matching heart rings because she loves my teeny tiny hearts. I just can’t resist! When we wear our rings, her face lights up and she poses with her hand on the hip like she’s a model. It’s so precious and fills up my heart every time! It’s probably why I love making my teeny tiny heart pieces!
Is there a funny or proud moment you want to share as a mother?
There was a time when I was working and Lucy pulled up a chair next to me and grabbed the little blue pliers I bought her. She told me that she wants to work too. She saw me making my ampersand bracelets, so I gave her some chain remnants and some copper wire, which looked like my rose gold. She soon became completely immersed in her project. Having her work alongside me completely filled my heart with such pride. It brought me such joy that she admires what I do! It’s a moment I will always treasure!

Creator of Bing Bang Jewelry, Anna Sheffield, chats with us about her style mantra and the must-have piece from her collection.
What’s the one piece in your collection everyone should own and why?
There are so many good little staples in the Bing Bang collection right now! The tiny skull cuff is probably my favorite. It’s something you can wear everyday and all the time. I have also been wearing the sacred geometry fan necklace from the Black Label collection a lot. It’s a great piece for when you want to wear just jeans and a t-shirt, but still feel dolled up.
Tell us about the first piece of jewelry you’ve ever created.
The first piece of jewelry I think I really ‘created’ was the bar two finger ring. It’s been in both Bing Bang and my fine jewelry brand in several iterations over the years. In Bing Bang, right now, I make it as an infinity loop with a Baguette. There is also one that’s in the shape of a cross as well. I just think when it’s done well, the double ring is super fierce, but also a little sexy.
What’s your personal style mantra?
“Better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven’t done.” We are all just finding ways to express our ideas and interests with what we wear, so fearlessness is the best approach to style.

Philanthropist and creator of Elephant Heart, Elyse Graham, chats with us about the origins of her brand and how far she’s come.
What’s the story behind naming your brand, “Elephant Heart?”
Elephant Heart is much more than just a business. We chose our name because it signifies a large, kind, loving, giving, heart. The spirit of Elephant Heart is “to open our hearts and make a positive difference in the world.” Elephant Heart integrates beautifully designed handmade jewelry with a commitment to volunteerism and social responsibility. One example that’s close to my heart is our Elephant Heart Greeting Cards, featuring original artwork by students at 32nd Street School in Los Angeles. We give 100% of the proceeds from the sale of the cards (2 assortments/10 cards each—$20) to the school to promote arts education and purchase art supplies. Because of the enormous generosity of our customers—our partners who have truly opened their hearts, we have been able to give 32nd Street School over $2400 thus far.
Which is your favorite piece and why?
It’s so hard to pick just one! My favorites right now are the Kiss Necklaces—I just LOVE all the bright colors! These pieces are cast from my own lips in Elephant Heart’s Los Angeles studio—so there’s a definite personal connection. The Kiss Collection was inspired by the large-scale sculptures I make—I use many of the same materials and techniques. I love the idea that they are wearable art objects that can be touched and enjoyed every day. They are also lightweight and comfortable to wear. Pop sensation, Carly Rae Jepsen shares my enthusiasm—her favorite piece is the Hot Orange Kiss Necklace!
Have any celebrities worn your pieces? If so, who?
Celeb fans of Elephant Heart include Carrie Underwood, Selena Gomez, Carly Rae Jepsen, Miranda Kerr, Camila Alves McConaughey, Eva Longoria, Brooklyn Decker, Twilight’s Nikki Reed, Kat Dennings, Rebecca Gayheart, and Vampire Diaries’ Kat Graham.

We love when different styles blend into each other and create new genres. Embellishments like fringe & tassels intrinsically have a glamorous and boho look, thus creating the boho-chic style - an elegant mix of being laid back and sexy.
There’s a daily voyage we all travel on. Whether it be a battle or a dip in the pool, surround yourself with the earth tones that can relax, take the mind on a wishful daydream and don’t forget to pack away for your next turn.

Since shortly before the Spring ‘13 shows, editorial & runway began embracing the crown in creative and interesting ways. Now the crown is moving to very wearable jewelry as well - such as this cool ring. Floral headpieces have always fun for Coachella, so no doubt we predict the embrace of new DIY styled crowns this April’s Coachella. Oh and we’re putting our bets on celebs like Nicole Richie and the Olsens wearing it right.
Also, check out some other dope headpieces - this leafed plated headband and sundari head chain.

Have you checked out our founder’s shop? A couple of her fav’s from the shop and why:
1 - Add some roaring character to your wall with this adorably fierce grizzly bear print. Check out Troy Moth’s nature work too. These impact pieces are great to hang above your bed like so.
2 - How cool is this serpent necklace? This is a piece that really doesn’t go out of style and even if there’s a saturation in the snake trend market and you can’t stand to wear it any longer, you can always store and pull it out later to restart the trend.
3 - I love the organic look of this knot stacking ring set. You know a designer is talented when they can communicate the essence - in this case knots aren’t perfect, ropes wrap - as does this ring.
4 - I have to say that I am actually pretty excited about the future of tassels. It was a trend I predicted on E! for nyfw and besides the embellishing, new takes on tassel accessories will be an artful & fun way to add texture to your outfit. I definitely plan on it with this tassel necklace.
5 - I’m into mixing an earthy style with a more glamorous look. Balance it out with this indian sweatshirt and a cool skirt as explained here.
6 - Stylish ear cuffs are making their way into our daily wardrobe. But it’s actually been a bit hard to find the really cool ones as not a lot of designers have nailed it yet. This spiked ear cuff is cool, great for layering in, and it’s a good show piece to represent the beginning of this refined yet edgy trend.
7 - I just bought this plant starter kit and am so excited about it. Being so crazy busy all the time, I think this is the great solution to getting my fresh veggies & herbs on demand.
8 - While it’s been the year of the studs, new and interesting earrings will start to emerge. These loop earrings are totally rad. It’s one piece that you slip in from the front of your ear hole. Very fun.
Tzunuum Jewelry designer and champion of wild hearts, Raphaela Cornut chats with us about her signature aesthetic.
What interested you in jewelry making?
Jewelry was a means to convey my love for colors and shapes in a wearable way. I think that style is more about the accessories you wear than the actual clothes, and I could never find the right things I wanted for myself so..here I am!
Describe your signature aesthetic.
I guess I’d say that it is modern and playful with tribal influences, for the wild at heart. I’m much inspired by modern art, mythical stories and music alike. It is hard to pin myself down!
We love all your tassels. Seems to be a rising trend. What inspired you to make jewelry with tassels?
I’ve always had a thing for the 70’s. Working with fiber and leather, it just came naturally as I was creating the pieces for the new collection. And also, they just look so great when people are dancing!
